Side-By-Side

December 3, 2019 - January 11, 2020

This body of work was created as a continuation of a “Body-Positivity” series I created in June of 2019. The 6 smaller works seen here are a small portion of the original series and came to fruition after I spent much of the previous spring struggling with my own personal body image and pondering what my definition of “feminine beauty” looked like.

Though the mediums of watercolor and ink are shared between the small and large works, for this new body, I wanted to begin pulling more from my Chinese heritage and did so by incorporating rice paper, the same material many of my ancestors used to create traditional calligraphy scrolls. In addition to tying in my Asian roots, this paper choice was also utilized to express the “fragility” of societal definitions of “feminine beauty.”
